Hazardous fumes forced a Taney County family out of their home Thursday night, and firefighters say the incident serves as a reminder to be cautious when using household chemicals.
Western Taney County’s Hazardous Materials Response Team found that the residents of the home on Painter Road became sick from the fumes when the acids found in common drain cleaners were mixed in an attempt to clear a clog in the kitchen sink. Crews spent about two hours removing the kitchen plumbing and sealing off the rest of the house.
Western Taney County says strong household cleaners should be used only according to package instructions, and should not be mixed because of the potential for toxic or flammable fumes.
