At Skaggs Regional Medical Center there’s an army in blue that provides valuable service to the hospital and its patients, and during the end of April, which is National Volunteer Month, those much appreciated individuals were honored for their many hours of dedicated service at Skaggs.

In addition to the roles the volunteers fill in the Skaggs system, they operate The Pink Door, a thrift shop in Hollister, and the Forget-Me-Not gift shop in the Skaggs Outpatient Center lobby. The volunteers also hold annual book drives, jewelry sales and various fundraisers to raise money for projects in the hospital.

“This year alone, our volunteers have provided more than $188,000 to Skaggs Regional Medical Center for various projects and equipment,” explains Rodney Arnold, President of Skaggs Foundation. “Our patients and community benefit from the hard work and giving spirit of our volunteers, from new blinds in patient rooms, spinning bikes at the Skaggs Health & Fitness Center, and cardiac stress test systems.”

The volunteer program at Skaggs was organized October 27, 1949 as the Skaggs Community Health Center Auxiliary. It served the hospital alongside the former Red Cross Volunteers, later known as the Skaggs Volunteers. As recent at 2008, the auxiliary and volunteers joined forces to create what is now known as Skaggs Regional Medical Center Volunteer Services.

There are more than 300 Skaggs Volunteers serving in many areas: hospital, hospice, Mended Hearts and chaplaincy. A Skaggs Volunteer typically donates anywhere from four to 16 hours of time a week, helping with various duties: filing mail, assisting staff, greeting guests, escorting guests, delivering meals, and more. After a few years of dedicated service, those hours add up.
