Branson Aldermen Give Final Approval To Change in Code for Outdoor Displays

By a vote of 4 to 2, the Branson Board of Aldermen has given final approval to a change in City Code that prohibits businesses from displaying their merchandise next to streets, especially along Highway 76. Under the change, stores like strip center businesses could display products no further than 10 feet from the front of their building.  For what are termed big box stores, merchandise would have to be at least 50 feet back from the road.  Alderman Bob Simmons voted against the change, as did Alderman Rick Todd:

Board members last night clarified the new restriction does not prevent the patriotic display of the American Flag.

A change in the Branson City Code, as it pertains to businesses that show off merchandise near the street, in front of their stores. By a vote of 4 to 2, the Board of Aldermen agreed last night to prohibit businesses from displaying products no further than 10 feet from their building, especially stores along the 76 strip. Alderman Rick Davis supported the change - he serves on the Planning and Zoning Commission that originally came up with the specifics for the new restrictions:

The operator of SpinCity, a retail store on West Highway 76 that specializes in outdoor merchandise, and has a display set up in front of her business, had asked the Board of Aldermen to reconsider its approval of the new restrictions, saying the livelihood of her business depends on the displays she has along the strip. She also said the city would be losing sales tax revenue if her sales decline.

This is "snobbery" at it best. Why do all you can to cause a merchant problems. That's not what a city is for, but this one sure is.

petty

I think it is a great move on the city's part. Some of those displays along Hwy 76 looked downright tacky.

I have lived in towns/cities where these types of displays have been out of control. I cannot blame Branson leaders for trying to control displays of merchandise close to the streets. At times, this can even be a safety hazard & likely would apply to the business that started all of this (I think most of us know which one). Leaders are trying to examine ways to clean-up & beautify the appearance of Branson's Strip, & let's try to support that effort. Locals often nag, moan, and complain about how Branson does nothing for them, well here is one area where Branson is trying to do something for everyone & some people still complain. It is not petty, it is one aspect of keeping the place looking good to those outsiders we all depend on to spend their money here. If it looks like crud, they may not come back. Branson has, and can have great things going for it. Just don't let the locals drag it down to Hollister's appearance. Yep, I said it.

Amen Bruce... You are right on...Time to clean it up...

This goes to show they don't care about the "mom & pop" business's that depend on this for sales. Get a grip Branson!!!

Thank goodness for Alderman Simmons and Alderman Todd on this issue. Government has enough to do without trying to micro manage independent businesses. There are much greater eye sores than these small merchants product displays. JUST LOOK AROUND! Shame on City Hall...they have much, much, MUCH more important problems without deliberatly harming the little guy. SHAME! Check out Bass Pro's product curbside...etc. etc.etc.

Alas, more government control over property rights. A city hall gone bonkers with dictates. Perhaps, just once rather than dictating contemptable ordinances, city hall would make more progress by REQUESTING help rather than DEMANDING COMPLIANCE. "He who governs BEST, Governs LEAST" Henry Thoreau often attributed to Jefferson

Enough with the bikinis and junk on the side of the road. Things need kept out of the right of way. The faux outrage here is amazing, I'm sure the same people would raise all kinds of stink if their neighbor put up a hundred pink flamingos next to their house.

Dont you love it when the politicans try to thro there support for the city on this site. Next time you take your walk down 76 stop and visit with these small shops and and just see how they are struggling, and look them in the eye and say we dont care . take care of your own financial mess and quit worrying about the little guy.

Gosh, why the discrepancy between Big Box stores and small businesses. 50 foot from the ROAD vs. 10 foot from the DOOR. Think how far out a Big Box can put its displays from their front door. It is pretty easy to figure. And scary what the Big Box can do...That Lil' guys can't. Double standard. Who wrote this? Come on council I know you are elected and can do what you want and it is a hard job...but be fair and equal to all. It is called America.

I fully expect to come to town some evening and see the City Council holding their meeting on top of Lake Taneycomo. No doubt these people can walk on water and could meet on top of the waters. They are so ate up with themselves its unbelievable. They are never wrong and can always do their best to hurt the small merchant. Their day will come, remember them at the ballot box.

Wonder why HCW and MPI were aloud to do as they wanted on construction , oh I forgot turn the other way , and destroy all the countryside on so called projects that have yet to be completed, one standard for the good ole boy with money and one for the local business owner. What ever happened to the Tanstone project oops it failed too.
