Ephraim Jayson “EJ” Cates

Ephraim Jayson “EJ” Cates, age 89, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away March 7, 2021, at his home with family at his bedside. He entered this life September 25, 1931, in Alton, Missouri, the son of Ira and Alma Cates. Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Lois M. Cates; and six siblings.


EJ Cates

EJ was a television technician for 45 years before retiring and taking up beekeeping with 2000 hives. He was the type of man who would rather build something than buy it. With his “tinkering” skills, he and could fix most anything that was broken. He was admired for his quiet strength, and was a great husband and father. He will be greatly missed.


EJ is survived by his two sons: Dale Cates of Springfield, Missouri, and David (Connie) Cates of Ventura, California; two daughters: Patricia (Kenny) Yaeger of Houston, Missouri, and Dorene Cates of Bakersfield, California; grandchildren: Cindy, Crystal, Jason, Nathan, Dustin, Damon, Victoria, and David; great-grandchildren: Natalie, Zachary, Adam, and Andrew; and great-great-grandchildren: Annie, Anna, Ethan, and Elliott.
