Lather Dill (L.D.) Brightwell

After a long full life Lather Dill Brightwell (L.D.) 100 of Jenkins, Missouri passed in his home surrounded by family on Sunday May 24th, 2020. L.D. was born in Bald Knob, Arkansas on June 7th, 1919 to Lathe and Ida Brightwell. He had 3 brothers and one sister who preceded him in death. A son, Jimmy Ray Brightwell, 2 grandsons Dennis Caudle and Steve Gurney and a son-in-law Ken McGruder preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years Leoda Mae Brightwell; 3 daughters, De McGruder, her daughter Marty Coones and her children Allie and Truan of Cassville, Missouri, Deronda Gurney and her husband Tom Gurney and a grandson, Joshua of Shell Knob, Missouri, Debra McIntyre and her husband Tim of Kingsburg, California, their son Todd, his wife Josy of Cassville Missouri their Children Reef and Rya. Lindsey Hernandez her husband Joey, their children McKenzie, Presley and Charley of Kingsburg, California. Also grandsons Clint and Jason Brightwell from California. An adopted daughter (as he always called her and fishing buddy), Diann Villines from Jenkins Missouri.



L.D. served in World War II as a machine gunner in the Army. He began farming in Arkansas where he and Leoda met and married. Then he decided farming wasn’t for him so he and Leoda and Jimmy moved to Wichita Kansas. He was in construction work, then moved his family to Dinuba, California. He retired there and moved to Jenkins, Missouri in 1971 and has lived in the same house since. He loved to fish and hunt. He was also an excellent mechanic and could fix anything. He loved going to the Music in Clio and McDowell. He made lots of friends at those gathering. He never met a stranger and could talk to anyone. He left home at an early age, 14, and hopped freight trains to work in different states. He had lots and lots of stories. He will be greatly missed by all.


Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Clio Cemetery in Jenkins, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Cassville. Pastor James Weaver will conduct the services.
