Marvin L. Johns

Marvin L. Johns, 95, of Shell Knob, MO, died peacefully Sunday, February 21, 2021, at The Missouri Veterans’ Home, Mount Vernon, MO.

Marvin Johns

Marvin was born October 22, 1925, in Quinlan, OK, the son of Roy and Laverne Johns. He received his diploma from Quinlan High School in 1943, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Asbury College, 1950, and later, a master’s degree from Wichita State University. Marvin worked on the railroads in Texas during his senior year of high school, learning the Morse code which he later used as a young soldier in WW II, serving as a paratrooper and communications tech in the 101st Airborne Division. He married his college sweetheart, Ruth Kenrick, May 30, 1950.

Marvin and his wife Ruth were educators and made their home in Wichita, Kansas where they raised their son Mike. The family loved all things related to nature, and in 1969 Marvin, Ruth and Mike built a family lake home on Table Rock Lake in Shell Knob, MO. Marvin and Ruth moved to the lake permanently in 1987, upon retirement from the Wichita Public School System. Ruth passed away in 2011.

Marvin was an avid golfer and bird hunter. He loved playing bridge, and woe to anyone who did not keep up with his rules! He was a voracious reader, and especially loved history and government, which he taught for 35 years. He was the go-to answer man for any questions one might have on US history. Marvin loved walking on his 120 acres near his lake home and never missed noting a good tree that could later be used for firewood or milled into rough sawed lumber. He enjoyed being out on his lawn mower up until the age of 94 and was most at peace sitting quietly on his dock. He could identify nearly any tree, flower or bird and share fascinating stories about them. He had a love of old-time country music, with Bob Wills being his favorite. He and Ruth were blessed to travel throughout the United States upon retirement. Marvin’s wit, gentle ways, and slow story telling with his Oklahoma drawl will be missed by everyone.

Survivors include his son Michael (Mary) Johns, St Charles, MO, grandson Matthew Johns and Aly Marti Chicago, IL, grandson Jeffrey Johns and fiancé Abigail Scherer, Ballwin, MO, sister Betty Jo DeBock, Quinlan, OK, sister-in-law Grace MacLennan, North Adams, MI and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Kenrick Johns, parents Roy and Laverne Johns, parents-in-law Harold and Dorothy Kenrick, brother Donald Rae Johns, sister-in-law Colette Johns, and brothers-in-law Howard DeBock and Robert MacLennan.

Due to Covid, Marvin’s funeral services will be postponed to a later date. Charitable donations may be made to Mount Vernon Veterans’ Home Assistance League, 1600 South Hickory, Mount Vernon MO, 65712 and the Lives Under Construction Boys Ranch, 296 Boys Ranch Rd, Lampe, MO 65681.
