Opal Lafern “Fern” Utter

Opal Lafern “Fern” Utter, age 93, of Wheaton, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2019 at Mount Vernon Place Care Center in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.

She was born March 8, 1926 in Greenwood, Arkansas, the daughter of Martin Asbury Beam and Gladys Opal Utter. On November 10, 1947 in Joplin, Missouri, she was united in marriage to George Corneilius Utter, who preceded her in death on April 7, 2014. Also preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Gloria Anne and two brothers, Kenneth Martin Beam and William Lee Beam.


Surviving are one son, Carmen Wesley Utter and his wife Teresa of Wheaton, Missouri; two daughters, Faith Dutra and her husband Ed of Mannford, Oklahoma and Aleta Motes and her husband Russell of Everton, Missouri; one brother, Charles D Beam of Helena, Alabama; one sister Letha Marie Blythe of Portland, Oregon; one sister-in-law, Mavis Beam of Lee, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Mark Laizure, Sabrina Laizure, Katherine Motes, Mike Dutra, Amy Bricken, Nicole Dutra, Christy Utter and David Utter; fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.


Fern attended school for a few months in Cleora, Oklahoma before moving to Wheaton, where she graduated from high school. After high school she attended certified nurse’s aide and med tech school in Monett. For many years she taught Bible classes and was very active with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. For 3 and a half years she worked as a certified nurse’s aide at Barry County Nursing Home. She was a member of Wheaton Church of Christ since 1963.


Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at McQueen Funeral Home in Wheaton. Steve Spillman will conduct the services. Burial will be at Muncie Chapel Cemetery in Wheaton.


The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at McQueen Funeral Home in Wheaton.


Memorial contributions may be made to Fair Haven Children’s Home in memory of Fern.
