Shirley Mae McGuire

Shirley Mae McGuire, age 91, of Shell Knob, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at her home.

Shirley was born September 23, 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Ollie M. and Lydia (Holmden) Thomas. On October 3, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri, she was united in marriage to John Max McGuire, who preceded her in death on September 7, 2014. Also preceding her in death were her parents.

Surviving are two sons, John M. McGuire, Jr and his wife, Brenda and Thomas F. McGuire and his wife Rosemarie; four grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

She grew up and received her education in Kansas City, Missouri where she graduated from East High School. After graduating she worked at the Army Effects Bureau in Kansas City where she met John. Being an Army wife for twenty years, she accompanied John across the United States as well as to Ethiopia and territorial Hawaii. Later she worked at the Montebello Unified School District in California until they retired to Shell Knob in 1974.

Some of her favorite pastimes were playing bridge, golf and traveling.

She loved being with her family and enjoyed attending church where she was a member of Central Community United Methodist Church in Shell Knob.

Private funeral services with burial will be in Missouri Veteran’s Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Shell Knob. Pastor Bill Kanagy will officiate.

Contributions may be made to CCUMC Scholarship Fund in memory of Shirley.
