Sondra Sue DeRaps, (often known as Sandy) went home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, May 15, 2020. She was 78 years old. Besides being a devoted wife and beautiful mother, Sondra had many adventures in her life. She studied modeling in her younger years, owned a roofing company called Petticoat Roofing that employed all female roofers, she was an electrician, waitress, and owned a restaurant called Reabans in Hillsboro, Missouri, which was later named Station 21. Her final occupation before retirement was as an Administrative Assistant for the Hillsboro High School where she retired after 10 years. After retirement, she utilized the skills she obtained in her earlier careers to assist in the building of their home in Hillsboro, and rehabbing a lake house off of Bull Shoals which her family enjoyed for many years. This is where she spent her final days with her family beside her. Sondra loved the Lord and was very involved in her church, helping with the children's ministry and offering her services wherever needed. She enjoyed woodworking, and made kids furniture and toys for family or to sell. She also loved ceramics and had a small private studio in her barn, where she taught classes before moving to the lake house. She loved to travel, fish, camp, paint, crochet, sew, and many other crafts as well.
Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, hosting holiday dinners, and extending hospitality at her lake house. She was always up for a strategic game of Pegs and Jokers, and she almost always won with her seemingly endless Joker supply. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 46 years, Michael DeRaps; her four children: Julie (Paul) Suntrup of Missouri, Deanne (Richard) Bland of North Carolina, Diane Mazur of Missouri, and Stephen (Jody) DeRaps of Maine; nine grandchildren; Michelle (Alex) Hayden, Benjamin (Shelby) Suntrup, Ricky (Karen) Bland, Rob Bland, Ryan Bland, Joey Mazur, Lydia Guerra, Nick Guerra, and Andrew (Dawn) DeRaps; ten great-grandchildren; Chloe Hayden, Gresham Suntrup, Winifred Suntrup, Edmund Suntrup, "Baby" Suntrup, Aiden Dieser, Elijah Dieser, Melody DeRaps, Arik Freeman, and Phoenix Guerra; and three siblings; Dorothy (Jerry) Gritton of Illinois, Donna Edington of Illinois, and Scott (Brenda) Taylor of Illinois."
She is preceded in death by her parents Lena (Burrus) and Virgil Taylor, and an infant sister, Sandra Ann, and a granddaughter, Trina Mazur. "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her; 'Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.'" Proverbs 31: 28-29
