Sylvia Lula Ann “LuAnn” Gregg

Sylvia Lula Ann “LuAnn” Gregg was born on October 27, 1931, in a two story farmhouse on 76 Highway east of Branson West. She was the second of six children of Daniel Enos Gregg and Sylvia Grace Macomb. The family moved a few times, and when LuAnn was four, they moved to the property located on Gregg Road where LuAnn spent most of her life.

LuAnn attended Schooner school, a one room schoolhouse with approximately 30 students in grades 1-8. She then attended Reeds Spring High School in the original building in downtown Reeds Spring. She enjoyed learning and as class valedictorian she earned a scholarship to what was then Southwest Missouri State in Springfield.

On Groundhog’s Day, 1952, LuAnn went on a date with Eugene Proffitt, a World War II veteran who loved to laugh and was earning his teaching degree at SMS. Eleven weeks later on April 20, 1952, they were married in Fordland, Missouri. Regarding their very short courtship, Mom happily said, “If you know he’s the right one, why wait?”

Gene and LuAnn raised six children together and were married for 49 years and one month until Gene’s death in 2001. Gene and LuAnn are survived by their children, Kathryn Proffitt Barr and husband Robert, Paul Proffitt and wife Linda, Roger Proffitt and wife Jodi, David Proffitt, Janice Proffitt Powell and husband Ted, and Jerry Proffitt and wife Annette. There are 21 grandchildren: Scott Parker, Amy Barr Rust, Jennifer Barr Williams, Laura, Luke, and Lee Barr; Joanna and Michael Proffitt; Rachel and Joshua Proffitt; Isaac Proffitt; David, Bethany, Jaimie, Kaylyn, Aaron, Hannah, and Camryn Powell; and Emma Proffitt Lubbers, and Daniel and Jonathan Proffitt. Great grandchildren are Brien and Brennan Rust, Tyson and Eli Williams, and Jack Lubbers. LuAnn is also survived by her sister, Anna Merle Grim and her brothers, Edgar and Elmer Gregg.

LuAnn is preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Nathan and Charles Gregg.

On February 26, 2005, LuAnn married Hairl Chapman, the second love of her life and moved to Blue Eye, Missouri. Together Hairl and LuAnn finished up his career as a contractor and continued to operate their farm until Hairl’s death in January 2018. LuAnn moved to Owasso, Oklahoma in March 2018 where she enjoyed visiting with family and beating her caregivers at dominoes.

Sylvia Lula Ann Gregg Proffitt Chapman spent her last earthly days with her family and took her first breath in heaven on June 18, 2020 at approximately 3:30 am. She was assured of the hope of heaven because when she was 11 years old, she and her sister asked Jesus to save them and in His grace and mercy, He did. Praise the Lord.
