Velma Elizabeth Woolis
Velma Elizabeth Woolis, age 79, of Shell Knob, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2020 at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri.
She was born May 2, 1941 in Weir, Kansas the daughter of John and Rachel (Bunney) Newport. On November 26, 1960 she was united in marriage to John Woolis, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Culver and her husband Ted of Wichita, Kansas; five grandchildren, Shawn Nimmo, Chad Nimmo and Jason Welch all of Wichita, Kansas and Rachel Cotton and David Cotton both of Topeka, Kansas; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter Cynthia Caudell; two brothers, John Newport and Jimmie Newport and one sister, Roberta Blosser.
Velma grew up and received education in Weir, Kansas where she graduated from high school. For a few years she worked as a cook for a nursing home in Pittsburg, Kansas and then in the café at J C Penney in Wichita, Kansas. Later she was a cook at Lehir Restaurant in Andover, Kansas and then in Augusta, Kansas. In 1992 she and John retired to Shell Knob where she worked for six years as a cook for the school.
She was a member of Grace Community Church in Shell Knob. Velma loved kids and was a girl scout leader for several years and also taught Sunday School. Some of her favorite pastimes were camping, traveling, water skiing and riding motorcycles.
Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 12, 2020 at Grace Community Church in Shell Knob, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home in Shell Knob. Pastor Joe Evans will conduct the services. Burial will be at Lake Park Memorial Gardens in Shell Knob.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Thursday at Grace Community Church in Shell Knob.
