Victor Van Hanner Jr.

Victor Van Hanner Jr., a.k.a. Van, passed away May 8, 2020, in Springfield, Missouri. Van was born November 8, 1933 in Fillmore, Missouri to Victor and Ethel (Allmon) Hanner. He grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri, but eventually moved down to Taney County with his family for their retirement. On November 1, 1955, he was drafted into the Army where he was an armory crewman for two years. When he was released from duty, he fell in love with Dorothy Sell and married in 1960. Throughout their years together, Van had many careers including sales, trucking, and owning a bait and tackle shop as well as a portrait shop with his wife. His favorite job was being a trucker as he loved to travel. He would even bring his grandson, Todd, along to enjoy the experiences he loved so much.

Van was known to be caring, funny, outgoing, and full of stories. Even at his age of 86, his memory was very sharp. He would tell his grandchildren stories, folklores, and rhymes that he grew up with without skipping a beat. He loved history so much that he made genealogy books for future generations to sit and enjoy. Van was also an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. His joyful personality brought smiles and laughter to all those around him. He was known to make friends wherever he went and loved with his entire heart. Van was also a loved member of the community. He was a member of the American Veterans Post #78 in Rockaway Beach, Missouri as well as the Merriam Woods Betterment Association.

Victor is survived by his grandchildren: Todd Lukehart and wife Renee, Stacie Lukehart, Scott Lukehart, and Krista White; Great-grandchildren: Kyle, Tristan, Christopher, and Ciara.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Ethel Hanner, wife, Dorothy (Sell) Hanner, and daughter, Bunnita White.

Victor Van Hanner will be buried at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri with military honors. Services have been entrusted to Whelchel Grace Funeral Home.
